Thought Of The Week: Lynette Sunderland
Written by Writings & Sermons by others — 9 June 2016
As part of National Volunteer Week, this Shabbat sees us celebrating and thanking once again those who volunteer in some capacity their time and abilities. Here at Alyth we are incredibly fortunate to have so many volunteer opportunities. There is always something to do and with the skills, commitment and enthusiasm that volunteers bring this makes Alyth the vibrant, busy and thriving place it is.
People of all ages volunteer – from our madrichim (young leaders) to our volunteers in their 70s and 80s and even 90s! – everyone finds their space to assist in creating community.
Anything from sitting on organising groups to helping individuals in our community – there are a plethora of things in which you can participate. In a time when a lot of us are living longer but still have the strength to do, giving ourselves a quality of life by helping others can be enriching and rewarding. New friendships are made, new skills are offered and learnt and the knowledge and participation results in community at its best! Involvement can be for as little or as much time as you can offer.
So this weekend, we will hear from a few of our volunteers about what they do and how it benefits them and others. We will also be hearing from Julie Siddiqi, the founder of Sadaqa Day (the equivalent of Mitzvah Day) and we will be thanking wholeheartedly those who volunteer at Alyth (and in the wider community). If you would like to be a part of our volunteer team then please come and speak to any one of us about the many opportunities there are and how you can be involved.
