Thought Of The Week: 29 October 2015 – Chloe Kimmel
Written by Writings & Sermons by others — 29 October 2015
In this week’s Torah portion, Abraham argues with God for the sake of Sodom, a city whose ‘outrage is so great’, in which the people come to reflect the city.
We all know that places and communities can have a certain ‘feel’ to them, an essence. So, as I sit here in the Youth Office, show tunes humming away in the back ground, and a feeling of relief and calm all over now that the High Holy days are done, what can I say about the essence of Alyth as I reflect on the last two months and the start of my Alyth adventure?
Alyth is very very different from Sodom. In fact, the absolute opposite. I moved back from Brighton over two months ago and feel as though my whole world and routine has been turned upside down. The way that I was welcomed into my new community by parents, children, staff and friends has been incredibly overwhelming, and it makes me so happy and proud to say I am a part of this Synagogue.
I have loved seeing the amazing atmosphere that Alyth brings to each of its events. Holding the Torah scroll in the middle of the Hakafot on Simchat Torah and watching all the smiling, happy faces whizz past me was definitely a highlight. Also watching how much love and appreciation the community gives to its staff makes this place even more special.
A few weeks ago, just out of curiosity, my Dad asked me if I was going into work the next day. I then replied “Yes!” with a huge smile on my face. I feel a great happiness walking into Alyth in the mornings, knowing that my team are there to support me over any hurdles I may face, and also that I get to spend all day with my friends!
So thank you to everyone at Alyth, who has made the start of my journey here an unforgettable one, and for welcoming me into your wonderful family.
